Korolev's Energia rocketry-space corporation, in co-operation with Boeing from the USA, Kvarner ship-building company from Norway, Yuzhmashzavod production plant and Yangel's Yuzhnoye design bureau, both leading Ukrainian aerospace enterprises, develops a "floating cosmodrome". The Zenit-2S launcher fitted with the DM-SL boosting block from Energia will be able to put in geostationary orbit a payload of 2,900 kg after being launched from a dedicated ship floating near the equator. The first launch is planned for 1998.

The article describes on the Soviet Air Force trainer development history and aircraft trainers currently in service with the Russian Air Force. A recent tender was launched on the selection of a single trainer type for the Russian Air Force. Projects involved in the contest are reviewed. A trainer complex concept developed by the Yakovlev Experimental Design Bureau is highlighted. The complex's core element the Yak-130 aircraft is presented and the test program status, aircraft performance, aerodynamic configuration, employment methods, prospects for series production and export sales are discussed.

The Sukhoi Experimental Design Bureau JSC, headed by General Designer Mikhail Simonov, has jointly created with engine, avionics, onboard equipment and armament developers an advanced supermaneuverable multirole aircraft the Su-37 fighter. All mission phases, including low-level flight with obstacle avoidance capability and armament firing are performed automatically. The Su-37 can attack any targets, including concealed ones, fire stand-off weapons, and features ECM capability. The aircraft's unsurpassed maneuverability is provided by thoroughly developed aerodynamic configuration and engine thrust vectoring integrated with fly-by-wire control system. The Su-37's unique performance will insure its effective employment through 2015-2020.

The Mir manned space station has been working in orbit for ten years, since 20 February 1986. The station consists of six modules with the newest, being the Priroda, attached this year on 26 April. The station has logged in space the time threefold longer than the guaranteed lifetime it was designed for. Effective servicing and maintenance, as well as the arrival of the Spektr module fitted with additional solar panels and then that of the connection block carrying two re-usable batteries have allowed to increase considerably the "margin of safety" of the Mir's on-board systems. All this has also resulted in the ability to keep the Mir serviceable in a few following years.

This article is about the creation of a long-range anti-aircraft defence system at Lavochkin design bureau. In 1955 the company commenced design work on the "400" ground-to-air missile intended to destroy aerial targets flying at an altitude up to 30,000 m with a speed of up to 3,000 km/h. A powerful digital computer in the on-ground part of the system allowed to track 10 targets simultaneously and aim 10 missiles at any possible number of targets. Sadly, but the system's testing was stopped before completion in 1962, when the design bureau was ordered to change its specialisation.
